In view of the current highly volatile and rapidly rising energy and resource prices, most companies are concerned with how they can reduce their energy requirements. The topic of resource efficiency is not new and modern production environments in particular are already optimized for efficiency in terms of energy use. This immediately raises the question of where and how energy requirements can be further reduced.
At WiriTec, we have been dealing with this topic since 2009 and know from many projects that the key to savings lies in the comprehensive transparency of consumption. To support our clients on their way to being more energy efficient, we have developed a 4-step plan for energy efficiency based on our experience from countless energy management projects.
With this in mind, we would like to show you in a four-part mini-series how you can further reduce your company’s energy requirements with the help of our 4-step plan.
As the name suggests, the approach consists of four successive stages. As part of an initial situation analysis, we examine the extent to which energy-relevant aspects are already reflected in the business processes. Especially the review and assessment of existing data are essential components of this analysis.
In the second phase, the usable data is determined in order to create the necessary transparency for concrete efficiency analyses and monitoring. The procurement of reference values and parameters, which are absolutely necessary for the calculation of characteristic values, is also carried out in this step.
Since unmonitored data can very easily end up in ‘data graveyards’ from which it is difficult to generate reliable statements in retrospect, the third step of our 4-step plan deals with how the ongoing evaluation and analysis of the measured data can be achieved, thus forming the basic prerequisite for effective energy management.
Finally, we look for ways in which the data obtained can additionally be used for other processes that are affected indirectly. Already today, a lot of decisions made in companies are based on information gained from their energy and resource management departments. Here, reliable data plays a particularly fundamental role when it comes to improving the basis for decision-making and avoiding mistakes.
