“Charly’s Colleagues” – Emanuele Simbola

In our series “Charly’s Colleagues”, you’ll have the chance to meet our other team members every few weeks.

Emanuele Simbola on his job as a sales representative at speedikon FM AG and a funny story about border control officers in Switzerland.

Emanuele, as a sales representative you are in direct contact with speedikon clients and are responsible for carrying out our projects. What do you like about your job and what can make your work more difficult at times?

A very nice introductory question. As someone who enjoys meeting and understanding people, my work provides me with a unique opportunity to explore different perspectives and tailor my approach to help clients digitally implement their own methods. It’s fascinating to see how each person approaches their needs differently while still having similar goals.

What I find personally fulfilling is knowing that I can simplify someone’s life with the help of our software. Of course, working with people also comes with its own set of challenges, but I find it exciting to adapt to each individual’s personality.

In your opinion, what topics are particularly important in the FM environment right now, and what trends can you observe?

It’s incredible to witness the progress of digitization in facility management over the years. However, for many companies, the idea of digitization still revolves around endless Excel lists. Only a few companies have made the leap to an Access database, leaving plenty of room for improvement. Currently, the following topics are hot on the radar for many companies:

  • The need for mobile work process data acquisition
  • An increasing openness towards cloud solutions, especially since the pandemic
  • Collecting data is one thing, but companies are unsure of how to utilize it. Analytics opportunities must be fully exploited.
  • The utilization of web-based solutions that can be accessed through any device
  • How to effectively implement AI in FM, thanks to OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI chatbot that is currently gaining traction and creating a buzz.

As a sales representative who travels a lot, there’s bound to be one or two interesting stories to tell. Do you have one in store?

I traveled to Switzerland for a former employer’s trade fair and ended up having a great conversation that led to a follow-up appointment the next week. Things went so well that I got an offer from the company, and we sealed the deal with a handshake – that’s how they do it in Switzerland! I had to go back to Switzerland for the purchase negotiations, and then again a week later for another appointment. But when I arrived at the border, the border control officer questioned why I was traveling there so often for such a short period of time.

The border control officer then thoroughly searched my car. After that, the border control officers searched my car every time I crossed the border, regardless of which crossing I used. After some time, I changed my license plate number and the searches finally stopped.

They of course never found anything, but the stops were a good excuse for me to take a coffee break whenever I got pulled over.

speedikon is based in the Bergstrasse region. Have you already had the opportunity to explore Bensheim and if so, what did you particularly like about it?

Yes, I actually went to downtown Bensheim when I joined the company. During my first visit, I was looking for some food and got a chance to explore the city. It was early January and a lot of the restaurants were closed, but that gave me more time to walk around and check out the beautiful half-timbered downtown area.
